Today the French broke a 17 year old rail speed record using their new double-power V150 electric train system to hit a speed of 359.25 MPH, beating their previous record set in 1990 by by over 37 MPH.
According to their website, the V150 can develop an amazing output of 19.6 megawatts (over 25,000 horsepower), compared to 9.3 megawatts (12,500 horsepower) for a conventional TGV. In other words, the V150 wields almost twice the power as the combined power of all the cars present on the track at the start of a Formula I Grand Prix race.
The V150 trainset is made up of 2 TGVTM POS power cars, 3 TGVTM Duplex (double-decker) coaches and 2 latest-generation very high-speed train motorized bogies developed by Alstom: the AGVTM.
